Gray’s Memoirs – 1775

Just got this in. Although the book is not considered valuable, it is a wonderful example of the craftsmanship of paper making, printing, bookbinding and many of the auxiliary crafts supporting 18th century book production.

I could go on and on, but am just delighted to have this in my possession long enough to make a hinge repair. My friend David has brought this and many other beautifully made older books to the bindery. When he walks in, I can’t wait to see what he has.

Tom Glass

Thank you Tom for assisting at last weekend’s “Dating Old Photos” talk given to the Willamette Valley Genealogical Society at the State Library. Attendance was very good and I hope everyone had a little fun and learned some facts to help them better establish the date of an old photo.

Tom has an extensive collection of Buffalo Bill images and also a huge collection of Civil War generals of the Union Army. He is busy finishing a book about these generals that will include their picture and a short biography.

In this picture of Tom he is holding an ambrotype of a soldier drummer. It had unusual clarity and in fine condition, it just needed the hinge to be glued and tightened. That’s going to cost you lunch, Tom!

Pete Seeger Ballads Complete

From wikipedia:

Seeger was one of the folksingers most responsible for popularizing the spiritual “We Shall Overcome” (also recorded by Joan Baez and many other singer-activists) that became the acknowledged anthem of the 1960s American Civil Rights Movement, soon after folk singer and activist Guy Carawan introduced it at the founding meeting of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) in 1960. In the PBS “American Masters” episode Pete Seeger: The Power of Song, Seeger states it was he who changed the lyric from the traditional “We will overcome” to the more inspirational “We shall overcome”.

Pete Seeger’s American Ballads

This simple perfect bound book was brought in by the daughter. Her Dad and her had used this particular book to teach her guitar and just for fun. With hand written chord patterns and extra family added lyrics this heirloom is a treasure for both father and daughter. What great memories they have with this book.

The shot was taken after I had removed crusty tape from the front and back cover. I will rebuild the covers and pages most effected and show you the results when complete.
