Civil War Photo Album (CDV)

This poor album was on its last leg. The board pages were detached and the paper facings were in tatters. Because of the thickness of rehinging the entire album each page had to be disected to remove the original remains of the former linen hinge.

I removed and scanned each CDV front and back for a digital record. The scanned immages allow you to blowup the images and see details your eyes can barely see. Lots of fun, lots of work!

Texas Jack Photo Restoration

Texas Jack was too young to be in the Civil War, but Jeb Stuart made him a courier and scout. After the war the young Virginian moved to Texas to become a cowboy. Later he met and worked with Buffalo Bill on hunting expeditions and participated in a few skirmishes with the Indians. His reputation and charisma carried over to the stage where he, Buffalo Bill and Wild Bill Hickok put together a stage act that proved very successful. On tour he met his soon to be wife, Giuseppina Morlacchi, a dancer and actress from Milan, Italy. She is credited with bringing the Can-Can to America. Texas Jack was immortalized in comic books of the late Victorian era. Unfortunately, Texas Jack caught pneumonia in Leadville and died at the age of 39.

Willamette Valley Genealogical Society

Mark your calendar, on July 9th I have been asked to talk to the WVGS about “Dating an Old Photo”. A few years ago I spoke on the same subject to this group and we had a bunch of fun. The participants are encouraged to bring their own older photos which the group and I will review for details about the date of the photo, age of the subject, clothing, socio-economic status and any specific details we can glean. I think they allow guests, but give them a call.

Daphne Beaumont-Wright “Pip”

I mourn the loss of my instructor. Pip was the “ultimate mechanic” when it came to bookbinding dynamics. She pushed but had patience. She changed my life and I think for the better. She now joins William Mathews and others in that great bindery in the sky.

Cheers to you, Dermot and William Mathews.
