It isn’t all about books and paintings, sometimes there is a pleasant surprise. These binoculars are to be restored. In that process I will clean the lens, oil the screws and barrels and fit leather to the areas of loss. Come back soon and I will post an after shot of the project.
These French (Colmont – Paris) WWI field glasses were passed down through an American family from an officer who had served in that war. Can’t wait to get into these!
I have a pair of le viere fab. opera glasses and he leather is torn and broken, any pointers on how i can go about fixing this? or replaceing it all together.
Hi Max,
This is the first time I’ve run across the story of the Colmont binocular restoration. I acquired these from a neighbor in Hemet CA. They belonged to his father who used them in WW I. They were such a mess but I couldn’t bear to let them molder into obscurity. My heart skipped a beat when I saw the photo of all those parts strewn across your work bench. But I can’t argue with the results. They are beautiful and will be around for another 115 years at least. Thank you.
Susan
